New to Yoga?

Please bring your completed Registration Form to the studio on first visit.

If you have never done yoga before, these frequently asked questions may assist you:

What should I wear?
Light weight, loose, comfortable fitting clothing is the best. The practice of yoga is done barefoot.

What do I bring?
Bring a yoga mat and water. We do sell yoga mats for your convenience.
For sanitary reasons, we do not offer community yoga mats.

How do I prepare for class?
Avoid large meals at least two hours before practicing yoga. You may have some fresh fruit, nuts, juice or foods that are easily digested before you practice.

Do I need to register for beginner classes?
No, all of our classes are community classes with no registration. If you have never done yoga, try our Hatha Yoga Basics classes to start.

Do I need to arrive early?
Yes, before taking your first class, you will need to arrive about 15 minutes prior to class to complete paperwork. Following your first class, it is always a good idea to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to class so that you can begin to settle in and warm up.

What style of yoga can I expect?
Hatha Yoga is the main style of yoga that is used at Red Sun Yoga. The word hatha is the union between ha (sun) and tha (moon), a metaphor for bringing the body and mind together. You will learn how to combine the breath with movement.

What can I expect in my yoga class?
You will begin by either sitting or lying on your yoga mat. The instructor will begin by centering the class with the focus on the breath (pranayama). Next you will do gentle warm ups, followed by the postures of yoga (asanas), progressive muscle relaxation, deep relaxation and a silent meditation to conclude the class.

What should I do when I arrive at the studio?
You will be asked to sign in and place your shoes and personal belongings in the cubbies that we have provided in the reception area. You will meet your instructor and they will assist you with any questions.

What are the class fees?
Our drop in rate is $15 per class. Discounted rates are available by purchasing a class pass. We provide a 5-class pass for $55 or a 10-class pass for $100. We also offer an annual unlimited yoga pass (paid monthly) for $74.99 per month as a credit card deduction.

How do I pay for my class?
We accept cash, checks and credit cards (Visa, Master Card & Discover) at the studio. You are welcome to go on line to www.RedSunYoga.com if you choose to use a credit card through our online system.

How often should I practice?
We recommend that you come at least once a week to practice with a teacher, followed by two to three times a week as your practice continues to grow.

What are the most important things for a beginner to remember during and after class?

  • Remember, there is no competition or judgment in Yoga, and the practice changes from day to day. Remember to relax and breathe.
  • Honor your body by only going to your edge and not overdoing it. Competence and exploration soon come.
  • Please let the instructor know if there are any physical challenges that influence your practice.
  • Speak quietly in the practice room. Loud conversations can be distracting to yourself and others. We support and value the building of community, and encourage socializing in the lobby before and after class. Join your classmates there for a cup of herbal tea.
  • Make room for others. Be open to adjusting your space so everyone has room to practice.
  • Create an intention. To help you focus, you might find it helpful to dedicate your practice to a certain intention. This might be to become more aware, understanding, compassionate, healthy, strong, or skillful. Or it might be for the benefit of a friend, a cause or even yourself.
  • Stay until the end of class. Yoga is a holistic practice. Exercise increases heart rate and bood pressure, and brings blood flow away from organs to skeletal muscles. Relaxation brings heart rate and blood pressure back to normal and returns blood flow to the organs. Final relaxation and integration bring deep healing, balance and equilibrium.
